The distance learning courses are being offered through university’s correspondence learning department known as Institute of Distance Education (IDE), which was established in 1981.
At present, the Madras University IDE offers total 73 Programs that include 17 undergraduate courses, 21 postgraduate courses, 19 diploma courses, and 16 certificate courses.
Admissions to these courses are open throughout the year.
The curriculum of these courses is designed as per the UGC guidelines and Madras University uses the common syllabus for both regular and distance education courses.
About Distance MBA from University of Madras
The University of Madras Distance MBA program is a two years (Four Semesters) program that is offered in both Academic and Calendar year cycle of admissions.
The minimum duration to complete the program is 2-years and maximum is 4-years.
It is a distance learning program, and the method of instruction is through self-learning material, and personal contact program.
The self-learning material is sent to students periodically. They can also collect it from learning support centre.
The personal contact program classes, which are basically classroom lectures, are conducted at IDE. These classes help students to clear their doubts. Total 11 days of PCP classes are arranged for students per year. Although attending these classes are optional for students.
The examination are conducted online and results are also published online for the convenience of distance learning students.

Course Structure
The distance education MBA from Madras University is divided into 4 semesters. It offers total 7 specializations.
During the first three semesters, all students learn the same subjects. In the fourth semester, students can choose 4 elective subjects based on the specialization they choose.

Project Report:
Every student shall be required to prepare a project report in the final semester. The project report should be based on solving a problem that real businesses are facing in current business scenario.
The project report should showcase your capabilities about solving a problem.
You can submit your report through your supervisor or the head of the department.
Fee Structure
The total fee for Madras University Distance Education MBA program is INR 37,750 for students who have graduated from University of Madras, and INR 38,150 for students who have graduated from other universities.
The complete breakdown of the fee is mentioned as below.
- Total Fee: INR 41,150
- First Year Fee: INR 20,550
- Second Year Fee: INR 17,600
- Project Fee: INR 3,000 (Applicable to students if they chooses project in 4th semester)
- Application Fee: INR 590 (Applicable for online admissions)
Students need to pay the project fee along with the second year fee. The fee is applicable only to the students who opted for project in the 4th semester.
Students can make the fee payment through generated fee challan or through online payment gateway available at university’s official website.
Eligibility Criteria
Students who have any of the following qualification under 10+2+3 or 10+3+3 or 10+3+2 or 11+1+3 or 11+2+2 pattern of education are eligible for admission.
- A bachelor’s degree from university of Madras or a university recognized by UGC/AIU.
- A professional degree in Engineering/Technology/Medicine/Architecture/Law
- Professional Qualification in Accountancy/Cost & Works Accountancy/Company Secretaryship.
Admission Process
The admissions to University of Madras distance MBA program are open throughout the year.
There are three ways students can take admission in Madras University distance MBA program.
Single Window Admission Centre
The single window admission centre is located at Madras University’s institute of distance education (IDE) building.
Below are the instructions that students need to follow to get admission through single window admission centre.
- Fill the application form and submit it at the admission counter.
- Arrange the application form and other document in the following order
- Filled in application form
- Photocopy of certificates
- Filled-in computer coding sheet
- Photocopy of the certificates will be verified at the admission centre with the originals.
- Eligible students need to appear in the entrance exam conducted by IDE.
- Students who pass the entrance exam will be issued provisional admission certificate.
- After paying the fees, your admission will be confirmed.
- The single window admission centre is open all working days between 10 A.M to 5 P.M.
Online Admission
- Indian nationals can also apply for admission through online.
- Candidates who meets the eligibility criteria can visit ideunom.ac.in to apply online for admission.
- On the website, students can register themselves and submit their application and pay the course fee.
- Study material will be send to students through post.
- Students who apply online will require to send their original certificate along with the photocopy of provisional admission certificate to to the Director, Institue of Distance Education, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005 within 15 days from the date of online registration for verification purpose.
- Original certificates will be returned back to the students after verification.
- Alternatively, students can also visit the university campus in person to submit the original certificates.
Admission through learning support centres
- Students can also take admission through learning support centres established by University of Madras. There are total69 learning support centres are available in Tamilnadu.
- Students can download the prospectus and application form online to apply through learning support centres.
- After filling up the application form, students can submit the application form to the co-ordinator of the learning support centre.
- After submitting the application form, students will be issued a provisional admission intimation with enrolment number.
- On receiving the provisional admission intimation and enrolment number, students can pay the course fee online or through bank challan.
- The fee challan should be forwarded by the learning support center to the IDE. On receiving the same, IDE will send the students ID card and study material to the concerned learning support centre.
- Students will also be required to appear in the entrance exam.
