Results aa gaye, marksheet haath mein hai, aur ab HR ka email aaya hai jisme likha hai "minimum 60% or 6.5 CGPA required." Aapke paas SGPA values hain, semester-wise. Par CGPA kya hai? Aur percentage kaise calculate karein?

In this guide we have covered everything including what CGPA is, how to calculate it from your semester SGPAs, how to convert it to percentage, and which formula applies to your university, so that you can fill any form, job application, or admission portal with confidence.

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the average of your SGPA scores across all the semesters you have completed so far. While SGPA tells you how you performed in one semester, CGPA tells you how you have performed throughout your degree.

Most Indian universities shifted to a CGPA-based system after UGC introduced the credit-based grading framework. Today, whether you are in engineering, arts, commerce, or science, your final degree certificate will most likely show a CGPA rather than a percentage.

The reason CGPA is more useful than a simple average of marks is that it accounts for the weight of each semester equally. If you had a rough first year and bounced back strongly in years two and three, your CGPA reflects that improvement fairly.

How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA

This is the most common use case for this calculator. If you already know your SGPA for each semester, the formula is straightforward:

CGPA = Sum of all SGPAs / Total Number of Semesters

Step-by-Step Example (4-Semester Program):

SemesterSGPA
Semester 17.5
Semester 28.0
Semester 38.5
Semester 49.0

CGPA = (7.5 + 8.0 + 8.5 + 9.0) / 4 = 33.0 / 4 = 8.25

Example (8-Semester Engineering Program):

SemesterSGPA
Semester 16.8
Semester 27.2
Semester 37.5
Semester 47.8
Semester 58.0
Semester 68.3
Semester 78.5
Semester 88.7

CGPA = (6.8 + 7.2 + 7.5 + 7.8 + 8.0 + 8.3 + 8.5 + 8.7) / 8 = 62.8 / 8 = 7.85

Note: Some universities use a weighted CGPA formula that also considers the number of credits in each semester. If your university does this, the calculation is slightly different. The standard method above, which is what most universities follow, treats every semester equally.

How to Convert CGPA to Percentage

Once you have your CGPA, converting it to percentage depends on which formula your university uses. The standard UGC formula is:

Percentage = (CGPA x 10) - 7.5

Example:

If your CGPA is 8.25:

  • 8.25 x 10 = 82.5
  • 82.5 - 7.5 = 75.0%

If your CGPA is 7.85:

  • 7.85 x 10 = 78.5
  • 78.5 - 7.5 = 71.0%

How to Calculate CGPA from Subjects Directly

If your university gives you grade points and credits for each subject, you can calculate CGPA directly using this formula:

CGPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credits for each subject) / Total Credits

Example:

SubjectCreditsGrade PointsCredits x Grade
Mathematics4936
Physics3824
Programming51050
English2714
Economics3824
Total17148

CGPA = 148 / 17 = 8.71

This method gives a more accurate result because it accounts for the fact that heavier subjects (with more credits) should contribute more to your overall grade.

CGPA to Percentage Conversion: University-Wise Formula Guide

This is where most students get confused. Different universities use different multipliers. Here is a breakdown of the most commonly used formulas:

University / SystemFormulaCGPA 8.0 = ?
UGC Standard / Anna University(CGPA x 10) - 7.572.5%
VTU / Mumbai University(CGPA - 0.75) x 1072.5%
CBSE (for school grades)CGPA x 9.576.0%
AKTU / IP UniversityCGPA x 1080.0%
Some Deemed Universities(CGPA x 8.5) + 1078.0%
SPPU (Pune University)(CGPA x 10) - 7.572.5%

The same CGPA of 8.0 gives a percentage anywhere between 72.5% and 80% depending on which formula your university uses. This is why you should always check your university handbook or official grading policy before mentioning a percentage anywhere.

If you are not sure which formula applies, the calculator at the top of this page has all major formulas built in. Just select the one that matches your university.

CGPA vs SGPA: The Key Difference

Students often mix up these two terms, especially when filling forms. Here is a simple way to understand the difference:

SGPA is calculated for one semester only. It shows your performance for that specific 6-month period. If you had a great Semester 5 but an average Semester 3, your SGPAs will reflect that variation.

CGPA is the overall picture. It is the average of all your SGPAs from Semester 1 to the most recent semester completed. This is the number that goes on your final degree certificate and the one that most employers and universities ask for.

When a job application or admission form asks for your "overall GPA" or "final GPA," they always mean CGPA. When they ask for your "last semester GPA" or "recent semester performance," they want your SGPA.

When Is CGPA More Important Than SGPA?

There are specific situations where your CGPA is what matters:

Final Degree Certificate: Your CGPA (not your SGPA from the last semester) is what gets printed on your final degree. This is the number you carry for your entire career.

Job Applications: Most companies, especially in IT, banking, and FMCG, set a minimum CGPA or percentage threshold for shortlisting. A 6.5 CGPA or 60% equivalent is the most common cutoff.

Post-Graduation Admissions: Universities across India and abroad evaluate your undergraduate CGPA when processing admissions. IIMs, for example, look at your overall academic performance across all years, not just the final semester.

Government Job Applications: Forms for UPSC, SSC, PSC, and banking exams typically ask for percentage in graduation. You will need to convert your CGPA using the formula your university follows.

Scholarship Applications: Most merit-based scholarships set a minimum CGPA or percentage requirement. Knowing your accurate equivalent helps you assess eligibility before applying.

Study Abroad: International evaluation bodies like WES (for Canada) and UK NARIC assess Indian degrees using percentage or GPA equivalents. Getting this conversion right matters for visa applications too.

What is a Good CGPA in India?

This depends on what you are aiming for, but here is a practical breakdown:

  • 6.0 CGPA (52.5%): Minimum threshold for general employment and many private sector jobs
  • 6.5 CGPA (57.5%): Meets shortlisting criteria for most IT companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro
  • 7.0 CGPA (62.5%): Comfortable for most campus placements and general PG admissions
  • 7.5 CGPA (67.5%): Good for government job applications, PSU exams, and competitive master's programs
  • 8.0 CGPA (72.5%): Strong academic record, opens doors to product companies and top-tier recruiters
  • 8.5 CGPA (77.5%): Competitive for merit scholarships and IIM/top B-school applications
  • 9.0 and above (82.5%+): Excellent, suitable for research programs, fellowships, and international university shortlists

In engineering, 7.5+ CGPA is generally considered a decent academic record, while 8.0+ is what most top companies look for during campus recruitment.

How to Improve Your CGPA

If your CGPA is lower than you would like, here are some practical things that actually help:

Focus on high-credit subjects. Not all subjects affect your CGPA equally. A 5-credit core subject has a much bigger impact than a 1-credit elective. Prioritize time and effort based on credit weightage, not just difficulty.

Aim for grade improvements in electives. Many universities allow you to reappear for elective papers or take additional courses. Scoring well in these can push your CGPA up.

Do not ignore internals. In most universities, internal marks (assignments, attendance, mid-sems) contribute significantly to your final grade for each subject. Consistent effort throughout the semester adds up.

Calculate the CGPA you need. Use this calculator to work backwards. If you need a 7.5 CGPA after 6 semesters and your current CGPA after 4 semesters is 7.2, you can calculate exactly what SGPA you need in Semesters 5 and 6 to hit your target.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula to calculate CGPA from SGPA?

The formula is: CGPA = Sum of all SGPAs / Total Number of Semesters. For example, if you have 4 semesters with SGPAs of 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0, your CGPA is (7.5 + 8.0 + 8.5 + 9.0) / 4 = 8.25.

What is the formula to convert CGPA to percentage?

The standard UGC formula is: Percentage = (CGPA x 10) - 7.5. So a CGPA of 8.0 equals (8.0 x 10) - 7.5 = 72.5%.

What is 7.5 CGPA in percentage?

Using the standard formula: (7.5 x 10) - 7.5 = 67.5%. So 7.5 CGPA equals 67.5%.

What is 8.0 CGPA in percentage?

Using the standard formula: (8.0 x 10) - 7.5 = 72.5%. So 8.0 CGPA equals 72.5%.

What is 8.5 CGPA in percentage?

Using the standard formula: (8.5 x 10) - 7.5 = 77.5%. So 8.5 CGPA equals 77.5%.

What is 9.0 CGPA in percentage?

Using the standard formula: (9.0 x 10) - 7.5 = 82.5%. So 9.0 CGPA equals 82.5%.

Is CGPA the same as GPA?

Not exactly. GPA (Grade Point Average) is a general term used globally. CGPA is the Indian and South Asian version that specifically means the cumulative (overall) GPA across all semesters. Some universities use GPA and CGPA interchangeably, but in the Indian context, CGPA almost always refers to the cumulative average.

My university uses a different formula for CGPA to percentage. What should I do?

Use the calculator at the top of this page and select the formula that matches your university. If your university is not listed, check your university's official grading policy document or student handbook. If you still cannot find it, the standard UGC formula is the safest default to use.

Can I calculate my CGPA if some semesters had different credit totals?

Yes, but it requires a weighted calculation. Instead of simply averaging your SGPAs, you multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, add everything up, and divide by the total credits across all semesters. Some universities use this method. Check your university's grading policy to confirm which method applies.

Is 7 CGPA good enough for placements?

For most IT services companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL), the minimum cutoff is 6.0 to 6.5 CGPA. A 7.0 CGPA comfortably clears most general recruitment thresholds. For product companies (Google, Microsoft, Flipkart, etc.), the cutoff is typically higher, often 7.5 or 8.0.

Can I mention converted percentage on my resume and job applications?

Yes. You can write it as "X% (equivalent, as per UGC standard formula)" to be transparent. Most Indian recruiters are familiar with CGPA-based transcripts and will accept this format. For international applications, always mention both your CGPA and the conversion formula used.

How is CGPA different from SGPA?

SGPA is calculated for one semester only. CGPA is the average of all your SGPAs across all completed semesters. SGPA tells you how a single semester went. CGPA tells you how your entire academic journey has gone so far.

What is the highest CGPA possible?

On the standard 10-point scale used by most Indian universities, the highest possible CGPA is 10.0, which corresponds to scoring the highest grade point (O/Outstanding) in every subject across every semester.
